The day the Sound shook

The most powerful earthquake in more than half a century jolted the Pacific Northwest at 10:54 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 28, 2001. The 6.8 magnitude temblor originated 30 miles below the earth near Olympia and was so strong that it cracked the thick Capitol dome.

Seattle slid about 5 millimeters to the northeast, Poulsbo went south by half as much, and the Eastside moved up to 8 millimeters farther east. The quake also narrowed the Duwamish River by a few inches -- and Olympia dropped a quarter of an inch.

Damage was estimated at more than $2 billion, but only one death was reported (a quake-related heart attack). And the injuries, although numbering in the hundreds, were mostly minor.

Following are links and stories relating to the Northwest Quake, which served as a jarring reminder of the region's vulnerability to nature. (Also see our Special Report on the one-year anniversary of the quake.)
