BURNABY, B.C. -- Sounders forward Rees Bettinger scored in the 12th, 16th and 75th minutes as Seattle defeated the Vancouver Whitecaps 5-1 last night in an A-League soccer match before 5,796 at Swangard Stadium.
Jason Farrell and Peter Hattrup scored the Sounders' two other goals.
The victory ended a two-match losing streak for the Sounders (5-4, 20 points) and gives them momentum heading into a second-round U.S. Open Cup match Wednesday at Kansas City against the MLS Wizards.
"Sometime you just have to have a night like this," Sounders coach Bernie James said. "Bettinger and the whole team were outstanding."
Vancouver's Oliver Heald converted a penalty kick awarded for a hand ball inside the Sounders penalty box area to avoid a shutout in the worst home loss ever for the Whitecaps (3-4-1, 13 points).
