King County will pay $100,000 to two women who were pepper-sprayed by a sheriff's deputy as they sat in their car during last year's World Trade Organization unrest.
The settlement comes less than a week before a federal lawsuit against the county and former Deputy John Vanderwalker was scheduled for trial.
Melissa Benton, the driver, will receive $70,000, and passenger Shauna Balaski will get $30,000, according to Sheriff's Office spokesman John Urquhart.
The incident happened Dec. 1, 1999, on Capitol Hill as the women were videotaping WTO protests.
