A five-year Federal Way Police Department veteran has filed a $57,000 damage claim against the city, saying he was forced to wear a heavy leather gun belt and holster that damaged his hip.
Roger Baldwin, 29, has not worked as an officer since November. His Jan. 30 filing seeks $5,452 in sick time, $2,972 in vacation time, $9,000 in lost wages and $40,000 in general damages.
Baldwin said he noticed discomfort shortly after joining the force in 1996. In June, he sought treatment for bursitis in his hip. By last fall, he said, the pain was so bad he could not walk. City Attorney Bob Sterbank said Baldwin's claim likely will be denied.
