1874: Takuji Yamashita is born in Shikoku, Japan
CIRCA 1893: Leaves Japan for Puget Sound; lives in Tacoma Baptist Mission
1896: Attends Tacoma High School
MAY 1902: Is granted citizenship by Pierce County Superior Court
JUNE 1902: Graduates from University of Washington Law School
AUGUST 1902: Marries Ito Nakagawa, daughter of wealthy grain trader
OCTOBER 1902: Washington State Supreme Court denies him admission to the bar and voids his citizenship
1902-CIRCA 1913: Takuji manages lodging house and restaurants in Seattle; he and Ito have five children: Minoru, Haruko, Aya, Martha and Joe
1907-08: Japan and U.S. sign agreement limiting Japanese entry to United States
CIRCA 1914: Takuni moves to Bremerton; manages Togo Hotel
1915: Son Joe, 3 years old, dies
1917: Son George is born
1917: Congress creates "Asiatic Barred Zone," prohibiting emigration from most of Asia
1921: Son Minoru, 15, dies
1922: U.S Supreme Court denies his appeal of the Alien Land Law prohibiting Asians from owning property
1923: Manages Rainier Hotel
1925: Son George, 8 years old, dies
1926: Daughter Aya, 18 years old, dies
MID-1920s-1930s: Runs the People's Cafe in Bremerton; opens oyster and strawberry farm in Silverdale on Dyes Inlet
JULY 1942: Closes down farm and is incarcerated at Tule Lake, Calif., along with his wife, Ito, joining 110,000 others of Japanese ancestry interned during World War II
SEPT. 1942: Is transferred to camp at Manzanar, Calif.
1943: Is transferred to camp at Minidoka, Idaho
1945: Is released from Minidoka; finds work as gardener in West Seattle
1952: Congress abolishes last racial limitations on citizenship
1957: Daughter Martha dies, and Takuji and Ito return to Shikoku to live with daughter Haruko
1959: Takuji Yamashita dies at 84
1965: Congress puts Asian immigrants on par with European immigrants
1966: Washington voters on fourth try repeal Alien Land Law
1969: Ito Yamashita dies at 88
1973: Supreme Court grants aliens right to practice law
2000: UW Law School petitions state Supreme Court to admit him to bar
