GHB: Gamma Hydroxybutyrate is a depressant that starts with a giddiness but leads to a deep sleep accompanied by amnesia. The drug was originally considered a "natural" food supplement that relieved anxiety and built muscles. Today, it is illegal in the United States. GHB comes in a grainy, white powder that dissolves in water or alcohol, but its most common form is a clear, slightly salty liquid, sold in vials or small bottles. A few drops of the colorless, odorless drug can quickly render someone unconscious. In March, GHB was classified by the federal government as a Schedule I controlled substance.

COST: $5 to $10 per dose.

STREET NAMES: Goop, easy lay, Liquid X, Liquid Ecstasy, scoop, Georgia home boy.

ROHYPNOL: Rohypnol (Flunitrazepam), a sedative manufactured in Switzerland, is legally prescribed as a sleeping pill in 67 countries but not the United States. The drug is seven to 10 times more powerful than Valium. It is often used to produce profound intoxication, boost a heroin high or modulate the effects of cocaine. In larger doses or in combination with alcohol or other drugs, it can be fatal.

KETAMINE: Ketamine (Ketamine Hydrochloride), a depressant and a fast-acting general anesthetic, is relatively new to the teen drug scene but gaining popularity for the short-lived high it produces. The white powder is generally snorted. The drug produces hallucinations and a lost sense of time and identity. In 1999, the federal government classified Ketamine as a Schedule III controlled substance.

COST: $20 a dose.
