UNIVERSITY PLACE -- Gunfire aimed at a Pierce Transit bus had passengers ducking for cover and police looking for the shooter yesterday.

No one was hurt, but the gunfire punched a nickel-sized hole in two ventilation windows some 18 inches above the seated passengers.

The shooting happened about 7:45 a.m. as the bus waited at a red light on South 19th Street in Tacoma, Pierce Transit spokesman Lind Simonsen said. The driver was preparing to turn left onto West Bridgeport Way when he heard four to five shots.

"He saw the passengers ducking for cover and at that point realized they (the bus) had been hit," Simonsen said.

The driver sped off and contacted the agency's communications center. One of the six passengers aboard had a cell phone and dialed 911.

The bus ended up in University Place, so deputies with the Pierce County Sheriff's Department detachment in that city responded.

Pierce Transit provided transportation for the six passengers on board the bus. Deputies and detectives searched the area yesterday but were unable to find any bullets, sheriff's spokesman Ed Troyer said.

Simonsen said the bus agency had not received any threats recently.
