SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER STAFF
A Metro driver has been disciplined for posting a sign in his bus Sept. 14 that reportedly urged people to be unsympathetic toward all Muslims.
King County Metro, in disclosing the job action yesterday, refused to give the driver's name or describe the discipline except to say it's "significant."
The driver, who had been on paid leave during investigation of the incident, is now back at work, said Metro spokeswoman Linda Thielke.
Just three days after terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, a Fremont resident saw the sign and objected to the bus driver.
We said, "This is hatred," said Donia Love, who took the bus on Aurora Avenue North and who filed a complaint with Metro that night. "He started telling us we hated America and were un-American."
Thielke said the driver admitted posting signs that "referred to all Muslims as being opposed to this country."
He cooperated in the investigation and was sorry for what he did, she said.
He was disciplined for violating a Metro rule that forbids drivers from posting personal political signs.
His supervisor also felt that he had not followed Metro customer service guidelines in dealing with the passenger, Thielke said.
