"Leonardo Lives" will be at the Seattle Art Museum downtown through Jan. 11, 1998. For an introduction to the show, and to Leonardo, see P-I art critic Regina Hackett's essay, "The mind of a scientist, the heart of an artist."
In a nutshellLocated on the second floor of the museum, the exhibit is divided into three sections:
TicketsTickets are for specific dates and times -- at half-hour intervals. They may be purchased in advance through Ticketmaster, 206-292-2787, or at its outlets at PayLess Drugs, Blockbuster Music, The Wherehouse, Disc Jockey, Tower Records/Video and Budget Tapes & Discs. No advance tickets will be sold through the Seattle Art Museum ticket desk or box office, but same-day tickets will be available at the museum. Prices are $6 for adults, $4 for children 7-12 and for seniors 62 and older, free for children 6 and younger; discounts available for groups of 40 or more (206-654-3196). Museum members will be admitted free on a priority basis (no advance tickets needed).
HoursTuesdays-Sundays, 10 a.m.-5 p.m.; Thursdays, 10 a.m.-9 p.m. The exhibit will remain open until 6 p.m. on Dec. 26-27, Jan. 2-3 and Jan. 10. Closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day. Closed Mondays, except for members-only access to "Leonardo Lives," 2-8 p.m., Oct. 27-Dec. 29.
LocationThe Seattle Art Museum entrance is on the corner of First Avenue and University Street, under the "Hammering Man."
Getting there
For those driving to downtown on Interstate 5 northbound, take the Seneca Street or Madison Street exit and go west to First Avenue, then turn right. For those using I-5 southbound, take the Union Street exit and go west to First Avenue, then turn left. Metro operates a variety of buses along First, Second and Third avenues, and the University Street station on the Metro bus tunnel is one block east of SAM.
ParkingThere is limited parking in SAM's lot on the north side of the museum (accessible from First Avenue). The museum also owns the large Heliparker garage at First and Union (entrance off Union where it ends). Other nearby large parking garages are at Second and Union (enter from Second) and Third and University (from University); there are surface lots along First Avenue north of Union and at Western Avenue and University Street at the foot of the Harbor Steps. Farther away are the Pike Place Market lots along Western Avenue and the metered slots under the Alaskan Way Viaduct. If you park at a meter on the street, beware of 3-6 p.m. tow-away zones.
