AFTER THE STORM: The Gulf War 10 Years Later   On Jan. 17, 1991 the United States went to war against Iraq. Operation Desert Storm lasted 10 weeks, officially the shortest war in U.S. history. But for many, it's not yet over.

A P-I SPECIAL REPORT

Short war had lasting impact
Beyond the Persian Gulf, few places felt the effect of the war more than Washington state. Virtually all of the state's military bases played a key role. At the same time, no city in the United States played host to bigger demonstrations against the war than Seattle.

U.S. planes still patrol and bullets still fly
For thousands of the active-duty military people who fought the war or who have joined up since, the war has become -- in many ways -- a profession.

A decade later, America's 'easy war' lingers on
Vets and their families are still grappling with the war's aftermath and no one can say for sure just how many suffer from the mysterious collection of maladies known as Gulf War illness.

Lives that were touched by war
A front-line soldier, an archbishop who marched for peace, the second in command of allied forces, a couple whose son went to war and never returned. They are among the thousands whose lives were changed by the events 10 years ago.

Sanctions hurt children more than Saddam
Despite the hopes of many Western leaders, a decade of economic sanctions has had little apparent effect on Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein. But they have had a devastating effect on Iraq's 22 million people.
